An astounding piece of NBA History showcasing the career and the personality of one of the greatest players to ever grace the hardwood, presented here is a 3-page Rider Contract drafted in reference to “Pistol” Pete Maravich’s previously penned five-year agreement with the New Orleans Jazz. Drafted August 10th, 1977, this document showcases as an interesting read for basketball fans and law students alike, and clearly indicate the degree to which rules can be bent for world class talent such as the Pistol. In addition to laying out the details of Maravich’s salary for every season, the rider agreement also details special perks for Pistol Pete, such as the club’s agreement to lease him a Porsche Carerra for the duration of the agreement, single room bedding (no roommates) while on the road, and the ability for Maravich to appear in television or motion picture roles without the club’s consent. In addition to initialing the front page (“PM”), Maravich has beautifully signed on the third and final page in black felt tip marker, “Peter Maravich,” with the flawless signature projecting a solid “10” in strength and appearance. The lengthy term of this contract would sadly prove to be wishful thinking for both parties, as injuries and alcohol abuse would conspire to sap Pistol Pete's brilliance and contribute to his ultimate departure from the club only two years into the term. But like so many of our most beloved sporting heroes, from Shoeless Joe Jackson to Ernie Davis to Roberto Clemente, that all-too-brief comet's flash of light across the sky only strengthens our fondness and assures the longevity of his collecting appeal. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA (NOTE: Actual cert is full color).
